Happy Repeal Day! Let’s All Get Drunk!

Today is Repeal Day! What does that mean? It means we all get to celebrate the freedom to get drunk!

Time for a history lesson, folks. At the turn of the twentieth century, the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, which had been promoting Prohibition for many years, believed alcohol to be the cause of many (if not all) social ills. Mistruths about alcohol were told, bars and taverns were vandalized, and even people were killed. On January 16th, 1919 Congress passed the Eighteenth Amendment outlawing alcohol and ostensibly putting an end to drunkenness, crime, mental illness, and poverty.

In most cases, when you ban something, it usually tends to increase the desire for it. This was the case for alcohol, which sparked an up rise in organized crime to replace the formerly legal methods of production and distribution of alcohol. While people argued that Prohibition would be more effective if enforcement were increased, respect for the law faded and crime and resentment rose toward the federal government. Over the next thirteen years, support for Prohibition waned as the nation realized the problems it was actually causing. During those dark thirteen years, the criminalization of alcohol led not only to a rise in civil delinquency and organized crime, but also to the loss of customs associated with the production, preparation, and consumption of alcohol.

On December 5th, 1933, Utah (of all states) was the final state needed for a three-quarters majority vote to ratify the 21st Amendment repealing Prohibition and restoring the American right to a celebratory drink. The amendment still allowed for state and local levels of Prohibition, but by 1966, there were no state laws that banned alcohol.
